I Am Trying to Lose Some Weight, Is Cardio the Best Exercise?

I am overweight! I went from 123 to 155 over the course of 2 years of being stressed, not being active. I am 5’2” and 19 years old. I did Tae Bo Get Ripped Series on Saturday and Hip Hop Abs last night. My problem is if I spend an hour or two working out and then go eat I gain the calories I just burned right back. Does doing Cardio exercises help burn calories and is it healthy to do cardio for more than an hour?

What is the best cardio exercise to do at home, the two i know of are jumping jacks, and running up and down stairs. Are there any other exercises? And if i ran up and down stairs, how long should i do it for, and how many jumping jacks should I do in a day to get a good work out, and help me burn calories?
